Electrical Services for Labs & Research Facilities

Whether you’re running cutting‑edge biomedical research, testing materials or training students in science, your laboratory depends on precision. Dr Electric designs, installs and maintains specialized electrical systems for research and development facilities across Northern Virginia, Washington DC and Maryland. From clean power and grounded circuits to UPS systems and dimmable LED lighting, we keep your experiments—and your data—safe.

Equipment & Instrumentation Power

Research equipment is sensitive to voltage sags and electrical noise. Consulting‑Specifying Engineer notes that power quality and reliability are as critical to R&D facilities as they are to data centers. We install dedicated circuits and separate sensitive loads from mechanical equipment to mitigate electrical noise—feeding critical equipment from separate transformers or feeders and placing panelboards near the lab. Harmonic filters, K‑rated transformers and panelboards with 200‑percent neutrals minimize distortion from non‑linear loads. The result: stable voltage for freezers, incubators, microscopes and mass spectrometers.

Grounding, Bonding & EMI Considerations

Proper grounding protects personnel and equipment. We design grounding electrode systems and bond all metallic parts to maintain equal potential and reduce electromagnetic interference, safeguarding data integrity and instrumentation accuracy. Isolation transformers and shielded conduits further reduce EMI, and we install surge protection devices at service entrances and panelboards to protect against transients from the utility or adjacent facilities.

Emergency Power & UPS

Power interruptions can ruin experiments and destroy specimens. Studies show that about 83 % of outages last less than 10 seconds. Static uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) convert AC to DC and back to AC, with batteries that maintain voltage during sags and provide 5–15 minutes of backup power. Rotary UPS units use flywheel inertia to clean incoming power and supply 15–30 seconds of energy, long enough for an engine generator to start. We size UPS systems based on your critical loads and integrate automatic transfer switches and diesel or natural‑gas generators for extended outages.

Cleanrooms & Specialty Spaces

Cleanrooms and biosafety labs demand strict environmental control. We provide flush‑mounted, sealed fixtures and cleanroom‑rated outlets, connecting them to dedicated circuits and UPS systems for laminar flow hoods, HEPA fans and autoclaves. Lighting in cleanrooms must minimize heat and particulate generation; LEDs meet these requirements and reduce energy consumption. We also ensure chemical storage rooms comply with hazardous location classifications.

Permitting & Documentation

Research facilities often fall under multiple jurisdictions and codes. Dr Electric prepares sealed drawings, load calculations and coordination studies, and manages approvals with the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ), institutional design committees and EHS offices. After installation, we provide as‑built documentation, one‑line diagrams and preventive maintenance schedules.

Safety & Compliance

Laboratories are complex environments. NFPA 101 requires emergency lighting to provide an average of one foot‑candle and no less than 0.1 foot‑candle along exit routes for 90 minutes. NEC Section 210.8(B) mandates GFCI protection for receptacles in sinks and wet areas. Laboratories may store or generate hazardous vapors, requiring classification of certain areas under NEC Articles 500–503 and use of explosion‑proof fittings. Consult‑Specifying Engineer stresses the importance of separating sensitive loads from mechanical loads and using surge protective devices and dedicated feeders. We design systems that satisfy these standards and coordinate with your EHS department.

Energy & Reliability

Labs are energy hogs. Laboratories consume 30–100 kWh of electricity per square foot annually and use 75,000–800,000 Btu of natural gas per square foot. Lighting and space heating account for about 74 % of a typical lab’s total energy use, while HVAC systems alone represent about 64 % of total site energy. Because labs use so much energy, efficiency improvements can yield substantial savings; some studies estimate energy savings as high as 50 %. Dr Electric retrofits labs with ENERGY STAR‑qualified LED fixtures that use up to 90 % less energy than incandescent lamps, last 35–50 times longer and produce minimal heat. We integrate dimming, occupancy sensors and daylight harvesting to meet energy codes and reduce loads on HVAC systems. Our power‑quality improvements—filters, isolated neutrals and surge suppression—protect expensive equipment and reduce downtime.
