Question

Why does a fire alarm system need a secondary power supply?

Answer

NFPA 72 requires fire alarm batteries to power the system for 24 hours of standby and at least 5 minutes of alarm (15 minutes for voice evacuation). If the system relies on a generator, batteries must still provide a minimum of four hours of standby. This ensures the system remains operational during a power outage.
